Packing your self storage space can turn into a nightmare if you do not follow some simple guidelines. However, the good news is that with a little planning you can accomplish it easily and effectively.
Boxes
Use quality boxes that are sturdy and in good condition. Stacking same size boxes on top of each other will help maximise the amount of space you have to work with. Label each box with the contents so you can clearly tell what is in each box without having to unpack it. Make a list of everything you pack into the storage space, including the replacement value, in the event of a fire, flood or other damage.
There are also a few things to keep in mind when packing your boxes.
- Do not pack heavy items in large boxes. This might sound like common sense, yet many people overlook this simple step. Heavy items make large boxes hard or impossible to carry.
- Pack books flat instead of standing up. This helps to protect the bindings.
- Wrap fragile items individually in paper or bubble wrap to protect against breakages. Don’t forget to label boxes that contain fragile items.
- Try to fill each box completely, rather than leaving boxes half filled. Doing so will make them less likely to tip over or buckle under the weight from others stacked above.
Furniture and Other Large Items
Furniture, appliances and other large items that cannot be packed in boxes should be packed into your self storage space in a position that takes up the least amount of floor space. This helps to maximise the space you have available as well as making it easier to navigate your unit once it is packed.
Remember these tips when packing large items:
- Cover your furniture and appliances with blankets, sheets or tarp to prevent scratching or other damage. This is especially important with antique items and fragile appliances.
- If you are storing mechanical items such as lawn mowers, weed trimmers, etc., be sure to empty the petrol out of them before storage, otherwise the fumes from the petrol will gather in the storage space and create a fire hazard (as well as making everything in the unit smell like petrol).
By taking the time to pack your self storage unit properly and following these simple tips, you will be able to safely and efficiently make the most use of the space available while ensuring that your belongings are safe.
