Boxes are one of the most important pieces of equipment you will need when moving. Choosing the right boxes and packing them correctly and efficiently will help reduce stress and make your move easier. Make sure you get boxes of different sizes and even some special boxes for specific items. Don’t forget to have plenty of packing tape, markers and bubble wrap or packing paper.

Large Boxes

Use large boxes for large and bulky, but mostly lightweight items. There is nothing like trying to pick up a huge box packed with books to ruin your day, or even your back! You should reserve large boxes for items like bedding, bulky clothing items like coats, and linen. Whether you are using a moving company or having friends and family help you move, they will thank you for it.

Medium Boxes

You can use medium sized boxes for most household items including small kitchen appliances, pots and pans, and dishes. Try not to pack anything too fragile in these boxes, as they will likely have others stacked on top of them during transportation. For glass or ceramic items like dishes, be sure to wrap each piece individually to prevent damage. Again, be mindful of the overall weight of each box and if necessary fill extra space with packing paper or bubble wrap to prevent from making it too heavy.

Small Boxes

Use small boxes for heavy or fragile items such as books, figurines and picture frames. Doing so will help prevent damage to your fragile items and ensure that unusually heavy items like books are spread out among several boxes, making it easier on whomever is going to be lifting them. Smaller boxes are also easier to pack into a personal vehicle for added protection of fragile or valuable items.

Wardrobe Boxes

Wardrobe boxes are special boxes with a miniature hanging rod in them. Using wardrobe boxes effectively will allow you to pack your closet items together in the same box and maximize the space they can hold. Place heavier items such as shoes in the bottom of your wardrobe box first. You can also add belts, purses or any other items you may have in your closet but not on a hanger. Make sure to leave plenty of room below the rod, and then add your hanging items. Pack hanging items tightly to prevent them from shifting around and falling off the hangers. You can also use garment bags to cover your hanging items and help ensure they stay on the hanger. Make use of the additional space above the hangers by packing sweaters, purses or other lightweight items there. Doing so will ensure that your closet items are safely and securely packed together.

Packing your belongings into the correct size boxes will not only make the most efficient use of space but will also help to protect your items and make them easier to carry and transport.
