To the Fort Lytton Self Storage team,

We are shortly moving into a retirement village in Manly West and I realised to my dismay that the contents of our rather large home will never fit into the much smaller sizes of rooms, cupboards and the garage. We do not want to get rid of the rest as our children and grandchildren would like to ‘inherit’ some of it; only not at present. We have been advised to use your facility until the surplus furniture, paintings, books, ornaments and garden tools will find their way into their homes. It will be appreciated if you could fill us in regarding safety, insurance and preparation before storing.

With thanks, Jane McEvoy

Dear Jane,

Be assured that you can store with us, knowing that the security is the best in town. We offer the latest in security technology, with individual alarms, and units secured with a CCTV monitor system. You also are the sole person to have access to your unit. Although is it advised to insure the goods that you want to store, it remains your decision.

We invite you to inspect our security beforehand. Before you enter into any contract, make sure that goods stored away from home isn’t already insured as part of your existing home-owners contract.

Furniture survive long periods of storage best if protected with dust sheets or packing material that breathes (to avoid damp accumulating). Delicate pieces need extra care. Clean all furniture beforehand and oil with a non-sticky polish. We stock all kinds of suitable packing material and advice is always readily available from our helpful staff.

Take photographs of the stored goods to jog your memory when wondering what is in storage. Number your paintings and ornaments with a short description of each and keep the list, again, to assist your memory.

Cover your paintings with brown paper. Make sure that the back of the frame is completely covered to keep out fish moths. Paintings must never be stored lying flat on top of one another.  Cushion the corners with extra layers of paper or cardboard and bubble-wrap it. Store upright on a pallet – never directly on a floor. Always store art away from direct light.

Pack ceramic and glass ornaments in small boxes to keep the weight manageable. Fill empty spaces with foam chips or newspaper.  Label the boxes to simplify retrieving items. Leave enough space between boxes and furniture to be able to get to items.

Clean garden implements thoroughly and rub down with oil. Consult your garden centre or mechanic on how to store a lawn mower. Get rid of flammable and poisonous solvents.

You have a 24-hour 7 days a week access to the storage units. Do not hesitate to call for advice.

Good luck with your move. We are easy to reach from Manly West, and surrounding areas, and we hope to see you soon.
